The USA and Norway enter into a co-operation agreement on energy and seabed minerals

Thursday 20 August 2020

The US Department of the Interior and the Department of Petroleum and Energy have today entered into an agreement for the oil and gas, offshore wind and seabed minerals sectors.

The co-operation agreement, a so-called Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), provides a framework for further co-operation between the American and Norwegian authorities.

The agreement includes the sharing of experiences and best practice, legislation and regulatory initiatives related to resource management in the areas of petroleum activities, offshore wind power and mineral activities on the seabed. It also includes the sharing of scientific data and information as well as research and technological development within the various sectors.

- This agreement will strengthen energy cooperation between the United States and Norway. I am convinced that the sharing of knowledge and experience will be of mutual benefit to both countries, as well as contribute to good and sustainable resource management, says State Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, Tony C. Tiller.

The USA and Norway are two significant port nations and, after many decades of experience in managing petroleum resources, have much to contribute to the discussion about the best possible resource utilization, within both existing and new offshore activities. The cooperation agreement was signed today by the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Katharine MacGregor and Ambassador Kåre R. Aas in Washington DC.
