Winter 2019-2020: offshore wind energy in the Belgian North Sea breaks record

Thursday 2 April 2020

This winter (Nov 2019 – March 2020), offshore wind energy covered ±9% of total electricity demand, which represents a 50% increase over the annual average in 2019. Each year, wind farms in the Belgian part of the North Sea generate an above-average amount of green electricity in winter. The wind turbine capacity factor, i.e. the ratio of the energy actually produced to the energy that the wind turbine can produce at full capacity, reaches its peak during the winter months, when electricity demand is also at its highest.
