New Gas Development Likely in the Norwegian Sea
Monday 9 July 2018
The Fogelberg discovery in the Norwegian Sea is shaping up to be Spirit Energy’s next operated development. This is the conclusion following a newly concluded appraisal well.
The objective of the well was to determine the size and extent of the Fogelberg discovery, as well as to acquire knowledge about the reservoir properties – including how well the gas flows.
Spirit Energy discovered the Fogelberg prospect on Haltenbanken in the Norwegian Sea in 2010. Updated volume calculations indicate that the discovery contains between 40 and 90 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalents (mmboe) of gas and condensate. Previous projections indicated between 23 and 94 mmboe.
SEABED SOLUTION
If the decision is made to develop Fogelberg, the plan will be for this to be a seabed solution tied into the Åsgard B platform. From there, the processed gas will be sent via the Åsgard Transport pipeline to Kårstø, while condensate will be stored on Åsgard C until it is transported by tanker.
Spirit Energy is currently in the process of developing Oda in the North Sea. This oil field is scheduled to start production in 2019.
APPRAISAL WELL DETAILS
Well 6506/9-4 S was drilled to 4580 metres below the seabed. The objective was to reduce the uncertainty linked to the resource estimates for gas and condensate in the Garn and Ile formations from the Jurassic Age.
The well encountered a 67-metre column of hydrocarbons in Garn. Extensive data acquisition was carried out in the well. A sidetrack was also drilled to where future production wells may be located. A successful production test was carried out from this area.
The well was drilled by the semi-submersible rig Island Innovator, operated by Odfjell.
The joint venture in the Fogelberg licence consists of Spirit Energy, operator, (51.7%), PGNiG Upstream Norway (20%), Faroe Petroleum (15%) and Dyas Norge AS (13.3%)*.
* Dyas’ transaction with Faroe Petroleum is subject to approval from the Norwegian authorities.
