Monadelphous Secures More Prelude Work
Wednesday 19 July 2017
Australian contractor Monadelphous has secured another contract to work on Shell’s giant Prelude floating liquefied natural gas project off Western Australia.
The company has been handed a deal by contractor TechnipFMC for piping modification and fabrication on the hook-up and commissioning phase of the project in the Browse basin.
Sydney-based Monadelphous did not disclose the value of the contract but said the deal and two others – for a wind energy project in Victoria, Australia and a mining operation in Mongolia – are together worth around A$55 million (US$43.6 million).
In late 2015 Monadelphous landed a major long-term maintenance and modifications services contract for Prelude. The A$200 million contract will see Monadelphous provide maintenance, brownfield modifications and turnaround services to the LNG process plant, support utilities, hull and non-process infrastructure including accommodation and control rooms.
The company will also deliver fabrication services from Darwin, in the Northern Territory, in support of offshore operations at Prelude.
The contract will run for an initial seven-year period, with a further two two-year extension options.
The giant Prelude vessel sailed away from South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje yard late last month and is now being towed to the Prelude field in the Browse basin off Western Australia following protracted construction work carried out by a consortium of TechnipFMC and Samsung that started in 2012.
Measuring 489 metres in length and 74 metres wide, with a weight of 256,000 tonnes, the vessel is being towed by Singapore’s PACC Offshore Services’ joint venture company POSH Terasea using five anchor-handling tug supply vessels.
The 4800-kilometre tow from the South Korean yard is estimated to take around two months.
On arrival at the field, the FLNG vessel will be secured using pre-installed mooring chains ready for hook-up and commissioning work to begin, with the project expected to start generating cash flow next year.
The vessel has total processing capacity of 5.3 million tonnes per annum, including 3.6 million tpa of LNG, 1.3 million tpa of condensate, and 400,000 tpa of liquefied petroleum gas.
Shell operates Prelude with a 67.5% stake and is partnered by Japan's Inpex on 17.5%, Taiwan's CPC on 5% and South Korea's Korea Gas Corporation on 10%.
