Aker BP Gets Langfjellet Appraisal Nod

Tuesday 18 October 2016

Aker BP has secured permission to drill another appraisal well on its recent Langfjellet oil discovery in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

The company, formed by the recent merger between Det Norske Ojleselskap and BP Norge, will use the ultra-harsh environment jack-up Maersk Interceptor to drill well 25/2-18B on production licence 442.

This will be the third well drilled on the licence in the Alvheim area, following the 25/2-18S discovery well that was completed in August and the 25/2-18A appraisal, which was given the go-ahead by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) in early September.

The Langfjellet discovery is estimated to contain between 24 million and 74 million barrels of oil equivalent of resources.

The oil find bolstered an existing contingent resource base of up to 170 million boe found at the nearby Frigg Gamma Delta discovery and other prospects - Froy, Lind, Storklakken and Trell – north of Det Norske’s Alvheim field.

It has set the stage for a potential new area-wide development that could also encompass Statoil’s Krafla discoveries in the relatively mature play.

Aker BP holds a 90% stake in the licence, with sole partner Lotos E&P on the remaining 10%.
